What are the services like?
Worship services at First Presbyterian are traditional. They last for one hour, are conducted by one or both of our pastors and are divided into three meaningful segments. The order of worship is easy to follow and is clearly outlined in a bulletin given to each person as they enter the Sanctuary.
First, “We Assemble in God’s Name.” This portion of the service consists of the following:
- An organ Prelude followed by the Westminster Chimes.
- Call to Worship, which is generally a responsive reading, followed by a hymn.
- Next, we hear a Prayer of Adoration and recite the Lord’s Prayer in unison.
- We hear a Call to Confession and pray together a Prayer of Confession, which is printed in the bulletin.
- We hear an Assurance of Pardon.
- We recite the Apostles’ Creed and sing the “Gloria,” which is printed in the bulletin.
- Our pastors discuss the Concerns of the Church, makes announcements and has a brief “Time with the Children.” Children in 1st grade and younger may go to Worship Workshop after the “Time with the Children.”
- This portion of the service ends with a hymn and the Pastoral Prayer.
Second, “We Hear God’s Word.” This portion of the service includes:
- The Old Testament lesson
- The New Testament lesson
- The Sermon
Third, “We Go Out in God’s Service.” The last segment of the service includes:
- The Offering
- The singing of the Doxology
- The Prayer of Dedication
The service concludes with a final hymn and a Benediction from the Pastor
Special Note: On the first Sunday of each month, the order of worship is adjusted so that the congregation may receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion just after the Sermon.
