Care & Nurture for our Congregation
The purpose of this committee is to provide a pastoral ministry to the congregation and assist the pastors in their ministry of care and concern.
In seeking to serve the whole person, the committee’s work falls into three areas:
- spiritual
- emotional
- physical
Members Helping Members
The Members Helping Members program provides care for those returning home from the hospital, or suffering from continued illness, by providing meals, transportation to and from doctor visits (as needed), cards, and visits. Each month, two different church members coordinate help for members in need.
Health Ministry Team
The Health Ministry Team maintains First Aid kits throughout the church and provides service and training for the church’s two defibrillators. (The defibrillators are located on the first floor, in the mailroom near the Sanctuary, and on the ground floor of the building in the hallway next to the Fellowship Hall.) Members of the team also help plan and host our annual American Red Cross blood drive each May. In addition, they can provide blood pressure screenings, current health information and educational programs for members on health and safety issues. They work closely with the Parish Nurse.
Parish Nurse
For more information about health issues concerning you and/or the relationship between health and spirituality, please contact our Parish Nurse at 434-384-6231. Click here for more information about our Parish Nurse.
Prayer Chain
The Prayer Chain is a resource available to anyone who makes a prayer request through one of the pastors or by filling out a prayer request card, available in the pew racks. There is a box in the foyer, near the front door of the church, for your prayer request card or you may place it in the offering plate. Members of the Prayer Chain consistently pray for all who request prayer. To become a member of the prayer chain or to find out more about how it works, please contact Gail Kowalski at 434-384-6058.
Blood Drive
Each year in May members of First Presbyterian, as well as other members of the Lynchburg community, have an opportunity to donate blood in the comfort of our own Fellowship Hall. The date of the annual event is widely publicized and volunteers are needed to provide refreshments for donors.
Visitation
This committee visits homebound members on a regular basis and delivers a small gift to them from the church at Christmas and Easter.
Funeral Receptions
If requested by the family, members of the Bereavement Committee can provide light refreshments in the Narthex of our church after funerals. Members of this committee are also available, by request, to assist with receptions in the home of the family. Please let one of our pastors know if you are interested in this service.
